Politics Iran - the controversy over Ahmadinejad's call to
remove Israel from Palestine and ensure the Right of
Return of the expelled and displaced Palestinians and
their children.

The MEMRI report of the speech is taken from an Iranian
Student News site and translated by the Israeli owners of
MEMRI.

The Toronto Star editorialized that Zionism = Judaism and
that attacks on that philosophy was an attack on Jews and
Judaism. Or that is what they seemed to say and not say.
Both sides of their mouths? TorStar Editorial is shown
below MEMRI's report on Ahmadinejad's speech.  Purging
Nazism from Germany did not mean erasing Germany.
Purging neo-Con-Zionism from the US body politic does
not mean erasing America, most of whose citizens are
victims of their own government and it's ally.

My opinion is that the Iranian President's speech, however
charitably viewed, was poorly framed, although not
containing the apocalyptic interpretation of the Western
nations. Mr. Ahmadinejad's speech was a bonanza for Iran
bashers and helped even persons like the thoroughly
discredited Tony Blair to get a boost.

Imagine a non-nuclear Iran - or even a nuclear armed on -
attacking an armed to the teeth US or Israel, both doped
up on nuclear, chem, bio and genetic weapons!
But while
the west protests Iran, Israel is wiping Palestine off
the map
... almost  literally. Read Ms Hass'r report via this

MEMRI [their translation of Ahmadinejad's speech]
Special Dispatch Series - No. 1013        October 28, 2005        No.1013

{Iranian President at Tehran Conference: "Very Soon, This Stain of Disgrace Will Vanish from the
Center of the Islamic World - and This is Attainable" In advance of Iran's Jerusalem Day, which was
established by Ayatollah Khomeini and is marked annually on the fourth Friday of the month of
Ramadan, the "
World without Zionism" conference was held in Tehran.  The Iranian Students
News Agency (ISNA), published the full text of Ahmadinejad's speech. The following is a translation
of excerpts from ISNA's report and from the speech.}

[Text  above in { } is the MEMRI preamble before it prints its translation of the president's
speech as taken from the Iranian Students News Agency - note from www.Ishmael.ca]
which MEMRI shows below:

[1] "Prior to his statement, Ahmadinejad said that if you plan to chant the slogan 'Death to Israel,'
say it in the right and complete way. "The president warned the leaders of the Islamic world that they
should be wary of Fitna [civil strife]: 'If someone is under the pressure of hegemonic power and
understands that something is wrong, or he is naïve, or he is an egotist and his hedonism leads him
to recognize the Zionist regime – he should know that he will burn in the fire of the Islamic Ummah
[nation]…' "Ahmadinejad articulated the real meaning of Zionism:

"'...We must see what the real story of Palestine is... The establishment of the regime that is
occupying Jerusalem was a very grave move by the hegemonic and arrogant system against the
Islamic world. We are in the process of an historical war between the World of Arrogance and the
Islamic world, and this war has been going on for hundreds of years.

"'In this historical war, the situation at the fronts has changed many times. During some periods, the
Muslims were the victors and were very active, and looked forward, and the World of Arrogance was
in retreat. "'Unfortunately, in the past 300 years, the Islamic world has been in retreat vis-à-vis the
World of Arrogance… During the period of the last 100 years, the world of Islam were destroyed and
the World of Arrogance turned the regime occupying Jerusalem into a bridge for its dominance over
the Islamic world...

"'This occupying country  is in fact a front of the World of Arrogance in the heart of the Islamic world.
They have in fact built a bastion [ Israel ] from which they can expand their rule to the entire Islamic
world... This means that the current war in Palestine is the front line of the Islamic world against the
World of Arrogance, and will determine the fate of Palestine for centuries to come.

"'Today the Palestinian nation stands against the hegemonic system as the representative of the
Islamic Ummah. Thanks to God, since the Palestinian people adopted the Islamic war and the Islamic
goals, and since their struggle has become Islamic in its attitude and orientation, we have been
witnessing the progress and success of the Palestinian people.'

{ The square brakets [  ] below are those inserted by MEMRI ... note by www.ishmael.ca}

"Ahmadinejad said: 'The issue of this [World without Zionism] conference is very valuable. In this
very grave war, many people are trying to scatter grains of desperation and hopelessness regarding
the struggle between the Islamic world and the front of the infidels, and in their hearts they want to
empty the Islamic world. "'... They [ask]: 'Is it possible for us to witness a world without America and
Zionism?' But you had best know that this slogan and this goal are attainable, and surely can be
achieved…

"'When the dear Imam [Khomeini] said that [the Shah's] regime must go, and that we demand a world
without dependent governments, many people who claimed to have political and other knowledge
[asked], 'Is it possible [that the Shah's regime can be toppled]?' "'That day, when Imam [Khomeini]
began his movement, all the powers supported [the Shah's] corrupt regime… and said it was not
possible. However, our nation stood firm, and by now we have, for 27 years, been living without a
government dependent on America. Imam [Khomeni] said: 'The rule of the East [U.S.S.R.] and of the
West [ U.S. ] should be ended.' But the weak people who saw only the tiny world near them did not
believe it. "'Nobody believed that we would one day witness the collapse of the Eastern Imperialism [i.
e. the U.S.S.R], and said it was an iron regime. But in our short lifetime we have witnessed how this
regime collapsed in such a way that we must look for it in libraries, and we can find no literature
about it.

"'Imam [Khomeini] said that Saddam [Hussein] must go, and that he would be humiliated in a way that
was unprecedented. And what do you see today? A man who, 10 years ago, spoke as proudly as if
he would live for eternity is today chained by the feet, and is now being tried in his own country...
"'Imam [Khomeini] said: 'This regime that is occupying Qods [ Jerusalem ] must be eliminated from
the pages of history.'
This sentence is very wise. The issue of Palestine is not an issue on which we
can compromise.

"'Is it possible that an [Islamic] front allows another front [i.e. country] to arise in its [own] heart? This
means defeat, and he who accepts the existence of this regime [i.e. Israel ] in fact signs the defeat of
the Islamic world.

"'In his battle against the World of Arrogance, our dear Imam [Khomeini] set the regime occupying
Qods [ Jerusalem ] as the target of his fight. "'I do not doubt that the new wave which has begun in
our dear Palestine and which today we are also witnessing in the Islamic world is a wave of morality
which has spread all over the Islamic world.

"'Very soon, this stain of disgrace [i.e. Israel ] will vanish from the center of the Islamic world – and
this is attainable.

"'But we must be wary of Fitna. For more than 50 years, the World of Arrogance has tried to give
recognition to the existence of this falsified regime [ Israel ]. With its first steps, and then with further
steps, it has tried hard in this direction to stabilize it. "'Regrettably, 27 or 28 years ago... one of the
countries of the first line [i.e. Egypt ] made this failure [of recognizing Israel ] – and we still hope that
they will correct it.

"'Lately we have new Fitna underway… With the forced evacuation [of Gaza ] that was imposed by
the Palestinian people, they [the Israelis] evacuated only a corner. [ Israel ] declared this as the final
victory and, on the pretext of evacuating Gaza and establishing a Palestinian government, tried to
put an end to the hopes of the Palestinians. "'Today, [ Israel ] seeks, satanically and deceitfully, to
gain control of the front of war. It is trying to influence the Palestinian groups in Palestine so as to
preoccupy them with political issues and jobs – so that they relinquish the Palestinian cause that
determines their destiny, and come into conflict with each other.

"'On the pretext of goodwill, they [ Israel ] intended, by evacuating the Gaza strip, to gain recognition
of its corrupt regime by some Islamic states. I very much hope, and ask God, that the Palestinian
people and the dear Palestinian groups will be wary of this Fitna.

"'The issue of Palestine is by no means over, and will end only when all of Palestine will have a
government belonging to the Palestinian people. The refugees must return to their homes, and
there must be a government that has come to power by the will of the [Palestinian] people. And, of
course those [i.e. the Jews] who came to this country from far away to plunder it have no right to
decide anything for the [Palestinian] people.

"'I hope that the Palestinians will maintain their wariness and intelligence, much as they have
pursued their battles in the past 10 years. This will be a short period, and if we pass through it
successfully, the process of the
elimination of the Zionist regime will be smooth and simple. "'I warn
all the leaders of the Islamic world to be wary of Fitna: If someone is under the pressure of
hegemonic power [i.e. the West] and understands that something is wrong, or he is naïve, or he is
an egotist and his hedonism leads him to recognize the Zionist regime – he should know that he will
burn in the fire of the Islamic Ummah [nation]…

"'The people who sit in closed rooms cannot decide on this matter. The Islamic people cannot allow
this historical enemy to exist in the heart of the Islamic world. "'Oh dear people, look at this global
arena. By whom are we confronted? We must understand the depth of the disgrace imposed on us
by the enemy, until our holy hatred expands continuously and strikes like a wave.'"

Editorial: Iranian leader's racist rhetoric

Even by hardline Iranian standards, the comments by Iran's new president, Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad, were stunning. Speaking before 3,000 conservative students at a
conference Wednesday titled a "World without Zionism," the zealous leader called for
Israel to be "wiped off the map" and said a new wave of Palestinian attacks "will wipe this
stigma from the face of the Islamic world."

Such sentiments are unvarnished racism against Israel and its Jewish citizens and
deserve to be condemned in the strongest language possible.

Israel is long used to inflamed rhetoric from Tehran, especially since the Iranian
revolution in the late 1970s. But Mohammad Khatami, who was president from 1997 to this
July, had toned down the anti-Israel rhetoric and tried to open doors to the West.
Ahmadinejad's comments have now destroyed even those tentative steps towards
moderation by Iran.

Since he was elected in July, Ahmadinejad has upset Western leaders, and many in the
Arab world, with words and actions. He says Iran will resume work at a nuclear site,
regardless of possible United Nations sanctions. He has installed a cabinet top heavy with
conservative politicians.

In part, Ahmadinejad wants to be viewed as the main spokesman for the Muslim world. He
is clearly trying to show Muslims that he is more prepared to tackle the Palestinian-Israeli
issue than leaders in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, who are seen in some Arab quarters as
"soft" on Israel.

Ahmadinejad's words will only serve to isolate Iran even more than it is today. They will
also increase world concern about Iran's nuclear intentions and strengthen the case for
United Nations sanctions unless Tehran scales back its nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wants Iran expelled from the United Nations. While it is
unrealistic to believe Iran will be kicked out, it is reasonable to expect the U.N. to give
serious consideration to economic sanctions if such rhetoric continues.

Leaders from around the world, including Canada, have rightly voiced outrage at the
comments. Ottawa called in Iran's top diplomat within hours of learning of the statement to
convey this country's condemnation. Prime Minister Paul Martin said the comments are
"beyond the pale," adding "that kind of lack of respect, intolerance, anti-Semitism — this
is the 21st century and that statement is just out of an era that is long past and never
should have occurred."

Now that Ottawa has officially responded, it would be good to hear from Canadian Muslim
leaders. They need to distance themselves from such comments as those made by the
Iranian leader and to condemn unequivocally such racist and inflammatory remarks.

What is most disturbing about Ahmadinejad's comments is the underlying message he
directs not just at Israel, but at all Jews. While it is not right to assert that any criticism of
Israel is anti-Semitic, it is true some criticism of Israel is, in fact, a code for anti-Semitism.

Holding Israel to a standard that other countries are not held to is often an example of
that. In this case, it is a frighteningly racist statement made not by an individual or a
marginal group, but by the leader of a powerful and potentially dangerous country.

Israel has made and will continue to make mistakes, but Canadians must ask themselves
how they would act if they had a powerful neighbour forcefully calling for their
destruction. The U.N.'s resolution equating Zionism with racism is turned on its head
here.   In this case, Iran's anti-Zionism is clearly racism." [Toronto Star Editorial]

Our note: Israel had been creating Bantustans based on the Canadian reservations
system which itself was used as the basis for the South African Bantustans. which
Apartheid's then partner, Israel, assisted in creating for Black South Africans, pre-Nelson
Mandela's release.

Rafael Eitan the now drowned IDF general, decalred that with these Bantustans the Jews of Israel
would soon have the Palestinians
"like drugged cockroaches in a bottle." Many Israeli
administration Zionists, rabbis  and ordinary Israelis refer to Arabs or Palestinians as 'cockroaches'.

Recently, the Israeli president Moshe Katsav, came to Canada, stood next to John Manley, the then
Deputy PM, and told Canadians that: 'Palestinian babies, when they are born, suckle hate with their
mothers milk'. No protest from Canada. The report was in the Globe and Mail.

PA: Massive new IDF checkpoint aims at creating 'canton'
By Amira Hass, Haaretz Correspondent

Nablus Governor Mahmoud Alloul believes a massive new checkpoint the IDF is building south of
Nablus is intended to sever the Nablus and Jenin districts from the rest of the West Bank,
creating
a "canton" of the northern region.

According to Alloul, the checkpoint will complete the IDF's efforts over the past five years to
disconnect Nablus and Jenin provinces from the rest of the West Bank by closing roads to
Palestinian traffic, blocking secondary roads, and erecting other mobile and immobile roadblocks.

Alloul told Haaretz that, based on the experience of the past few years - especially the development
of the Qalandiyah checkpoint south of Ramallah - he has concluded that Israel will gradually treat
the Zaatara checkpoint as "an international crossing," which is ostensibly situated between
Palestinian and Israeli territory, just as the Qalandiyah checkpoint grew from an improvised
checkpoint into a crossing that looks like a border terminal.

This will complete the transformation of the Nablus-Jenin region into a separate canton severed
from the central West Bank, Alloul said.

The checkpoint is located at the Zaatara (Tapuah) junction, and is aimed at checking Palestinian
cars arriving from the northern and western parts of the West Bank.

The checkpoint was ordered by the IDF Central Command nine months ago, according to military
sources. It will have 10 lanes: six for southbound vehicles; one non-check lane for Israeli cars; one
lane for vehicles designated "humanitarian," and two lanes for northbound
vehicles.

The sources said northbound Palestinian vehicles would be checked only in special cases.

The IDF has thus far not made provisions for pedestrian traffic at the checkpoint.

The checkpoint is going up below the hill on which the Tapuah settlement is situated. According to
the military sources, the decision to build it was part of a Central Command plan for "shaping the
zone." It is scheduled to begin operating in about two months.

The reported IDF measures over the last few days to sever the northern West Bank from its central
region are nothing new. They were previously introduced as preventive or responsive measures, to
a varying degree of harshness, and are integrated into the permanent plan, of which the new
checkpoint forms a central part.

A diplomatic source who has been monitoring restrictions on mobility in the West Bank sees the
new checkpoint as part of the big picture of creating three separate blocs in the West Bank,
through Israeli control over and expansion of roads running east-west, and by expanding
construction in area settlements.

In this way, the new checkpoint fits in with the ever-growing Trans-Samaria Highway and with a
series of roadblocks cutting off the secondary roads exiting from the villages east of Tapuah
junction.

West of Qalandiyah checkpoint, in the center of the West Bank, stretches the Modi'in-Givat Ze'ev
road, on which Palestinian traffic is prevented through a host of dirt roadblocks and locked gates at
the exits of villages. Thus, the natural direct links between the northern and southern Ramallah
regions were severed.

Eastward, mobile checkpoints on Highway 60, the so-called "Jerusalem envelope" wall, the
checkpoint at Abu Dis en route to Bethlehem, and the accelerated construction in the settlements
east of Jerusalem create a barrier between the West Bank's center and south.

In the past five years, the Tapuah junction has had an improvised checkpoint at the end of a
narrow two-lane road. When Israeli cars, usually belonging to settlers, or ambulances circumvented
the long line of Palestinian cars headed south, the northbound lane was blocked. This past year,
the road was widened to enable Israeli cars to pass without creating traffic jams.

The wait at this checkpoint can vary from 10 minutes to an hour or two depending on the type of
check performed (a mere glance, examining IDs, checking the car and holding up each car for a
lengthy period), the attitude of the soldiers, their work pace and the time of day. Sometimes a
temporary checkpoint is erected to check cars coming from the west (some of which had evaded
the regular checkpoint by driving through local orchards and village pathways).

The new checkpoint will be located in the bottleneck into which will flow all the Palestinian traffic
coming from north and west.

Military sources said the checkpoint is intended to speed up the current system of security checks
and prevent jams. The same was said, however, when expansion work began on the Qalandiyah
checkpoint, and before it was decided to build the separation wall directly south of Qalandiyah.

Ms Hass is a formidable Israeli Jewish journalist who had been a courageous writer on these
issues. Can you image the stress and danger for her living amongst the culture that commits these
outrages? Many Israeli Jews, though a too small number, have place their well being on the line for
justice and fair play against their country's brutal occupation and land thefts which, in our opinion,
is a form of slow genocide tolerated by the West.
